“We are heartened and extremely encouraged by the Government's commitment to usher in a new era of gem and jewellery exports through e-commerce via the courier route,” said GJEPC chairman Colin Shah, the GJEPC reported on its website. “Of all the policy support the industry has received, the new e-commerce policy is unprecedented.”

The GJEPC expects the new courier-related rules to come into effect with the upcoming government e-commerce policy. The Ministry of Finance has created draft standard operating procedures for the rules and aims to provide a simplified regulatory framework for manufacturers and traders who want to export jewellery through e-commerce.

“I express my gratitude to our Honourable Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman for coming up with the SOP at the right time when there is a huge demand through e-commerce,” said Shah. “So, sky’s the limit for our export growth if we make the most of this golden opportunity.”

Under the new planned regulations, jewellery exports will only be permitted through courier mode following the full advance and photos of the jewellery. Prior to the implementation of the SOP for the regulations, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs invited feedback and suggestions from stakeholders by June 14, 2022.
