GJC meets with India’s Election Commission to discuss recent harassment claims

Published

The All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council met with the central Election Commission to raise awareness concerning a recent jewellery seizure in Coimbatore.

The GJC and the Election Commission reached an agreement at their meeting around harassment in the jewellery industry - Fine Jewerly: TRASFORMISTA from Nanis

After the GJC and India Bullion and Jewellers’ Association contacted the Election Commission at the central and state levels to voice concerns over police harassment of both jewellery businesses and customers, the GJC met with the commission to discuss the matter in detail.

The main incident that the GJC brought up in the meeting was a seizure of jewellery by administrative authorities while the shipment was in transit at Coimbatore, ET Bureau reported. The Election Commission responded and assured that no further harassment will take place at the hands of government officials during the current general elections which have their own codes of conduct for officials.

The GJC sent a delegation to the meeting which included its chairman Anantha Padmanabhan, director Krishna Bihari Goyal, secretary Naren Walters, zonal chairman Vijay Khanna, and delegate Mahindra Surana. The delegation and Election Commission agreed that clear guidelines on the exact documents needed when carrying a jewellery shipment are required and the Election Commission promised these shortly.

“We would like to thank the Election Commission for understanding the pain of the jewellery community,” Padmanabhan said after the meeting. “Jewellers pan-India raised concerns about the harassment by administrative departments during code of conduct at the time of General Elections. The movement of goods is an integral part of the jewellery business. Gold being a high value and price sensitive item, movement, unlike other industries, is not made by common modes of transport. At times in villages which are in remote locations, services of logistic companies are not available and the delivery has to be done by hand. Interception of personnel carrying jewellery by officials at railway stations, check posts etc has been very common phenomenon.”
