In order to cater to the specific needs of Indian consumers, Gap has developed a range of “Make for India” garments. The clothing, which retails exclusively in India, has been designed to cater to the colour, fit, and design preferences of Indian consumers which are often different to other countries.

“While Gap has democratic products throughout the world, some minor tweaks have been made for the select India range on an experimental basis,” said Parag Dani, the business head for Gap at Arvind Lifestyle Brands India. Dani explained that the range was created after recording customer feedback in India and that the prices have not been changed for the range.

Along with the new product line, Gap is trying out new small format stores which focus only on children’s wear or adult’s wear as opposed to the usual store format where both are mixed. The average Gap store size is between 5,000 and 6,000 square feet but the new adult only store format is only between 3,000 and 3,500 square feet and the children’s store will be between only 1,500 and 1,200 square feet. “We have set up two adult only stores, one each in Bengaluru and Kolkata. The Gap kids exclusive store will come up this year,” said Dani.
