With its list the Institute has honored the efforts of clothing companies such as Gap, H&M and Levi Strauss & Co.

In the retail sector, the 2015 list also features British company Marks & Spencer.

In beauty and cosmetics, French company L'Oreal, Brazilian company Natura Cosméticos and Japanese brand Shiseido have been applauded.

"The World's Most Ethical Companies is a distinction that honors major achievement in terms of transparency, integrity, ethics and compliance," according to the Institute. "The winners use ethics as a means to define their leadership in their industries, integrating their corporate values into everything they do, from each employee that they hire, and each partner that they incorporate into their network, to ensure that they will be able to provide long-term value to key stakeholders including customers, suppliers, regulators and investors."
