The two-day seminar event in Mumbai was inaugurated by the Union Government’s Department of Commerce economic advisor Rupa Dutta and National Skill Development Corporation of India’s managing director Manish Kumar, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council announced on its website. The GJEPC’s chairman Pramod Kumar Agrawal; the All India Gem and Jewellery Council’s chairman N. Anantha Padmanabhan; and GJSCI’s chairman Sanjay Kothari also took part in the inauguration.

With the aim of increasing India’s share of the global jewellery market, government officials and industry leaders came together to discuss technological and business excellence. Kothari said at the event that the GJSCI plans to hold the symposium annually and include other features such as workshops in future editions.

“The aim is to transform jewellery manufacturing in India both in terms of quality and best practices, so that India becomes the primary source of jewellery for such global big brands,” said Kothari at the event, the GJEPC reported.

“The industry must be flexible and innovative, and should re-skill itself as per the demands of the market,” said Dutta at the symposium. “For example, younger consumers across the globe are shifting to lighter jewellery in 18k and 14k, so our artisans and manufacturers need to relearn their traditional knowledge and equip themselves to develop such product lines.”
