The GJEPC also ran an India Pavilion at the Hong Kong trade show which brought 76 Indian businesses together, spread across 111 booths, the GJEPC reported on its website. With categories spanning jewellery, gemstones, and loose diamonds, the exhibitors networked with buyers and wholesales from a range of countries.

“The strengths of the Indian gems and jewellery sector, intricate jewellery designs are known the world over,” said the ambassador of India to the People’s Republic of China Pradeep Kumar Rawat, the GJEPC reported. “As we emerge from the pandemic, we expect the gems and jewellery exports to Hong Kong and through Hong Kong to the wider region to gain momentum.”

The GJEPC shared at the event that it is confident that India’s gem and jewellery exports will reach $75 billion by 2030. The government is also pursuing free trade agreements and running schemes to boost manufacturing for industries including the jewellery sector.

“With the restart of physical gems and jewellery fairs, we expect a fillip to exports in this sector on the back of India’s leadership in diamonds, gemstones, gold jewellery and now, lab grown diamonds as well,” said consul general at the Consulate General of India, Hong Kong Satwant Khanalia.

“India is the leading supplier of cut and polished diamonds, silver, and synthetic stones to Hong Kong and has the potential to become the leading supplier of lab grown diamonds to this market,” said GJEPC chairman Vipul Shah. “India is the third-largest supplier of gems and jewellery to Hong Kong, accounting for 12% of its total annual gem and jewellery imports of $77 billion in 2021. The trade synergy between Hong Kong and India has been a vital growth avenue for India’s gem and jewellery export sector.”
