The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council has launched a new round of initiatives to aid hospitals, migrant workers, and others as Covid-19’s second wave sweeps India.

The GJEPC has launched a mass distribution of food packets and ration items, it announced on Facebook on April 27. The traders’ body is organising relief for migrant workers, many of whom have once again lost their daily source of income and may have to travel hundreds of miles to their homes as happened in 2020.

The GJEPC is also donating ambulances distributing medical equipment, including dialysis machines, Intellivue monitors, and Covid-19 kits and protection equipment. It will also refurbish hospital wings in numerous locations, it said. The GJEPC has also planned to hold Covid-19 vaccination drives with the hashtag ‘industry fights corona’.

“As India fights back Covid-19, let us play our role in keeping our workmen, artisans, craftsmen, the real gems of our industry safe and reclaim the sparkle,” the GJEPC announced on Facebook.

The organisation is also returning to its online events schedule as local lockdowns necessitate the postponement of in-person events and trade shows in many locations. The organisation has recently published articles for its ‘Solitaire Magazine’, which it has made available online.
