GJEPC launches customs training programme in Surat

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council’s Surat regional office has launched a five-day training programme for customs officials, in collaboration with the Indian Diamond Institute.

 
As part of its ongoing campaign to boost gem and jewellery exports, the GJEPC launched a training programme for around 25 customs officials from Surat and Ahmedabad on December 15, the GJEPC announced on its website. The programme is designed to train the officials to contribute to making India a global hub for gem and jewellery trade, according to the GJEPC. 
 
In collaboration with ‘knowledge partner’, the Indian Diamond Institute, the training is focusing on the role of the customs department in trade facilitation, as well as the initiatives undertaken by the department in Gujarat over the past year to support the gems and jewellery trade. 

Chief guest, Gujarat’s principal commissioner of customs, Kumar Santosh, spoke to participants about the introduction of the Risk Management System for the diamond sector, which is designed to make the customs clearance process faster, in turn enabling trade to grow.
 
The GJEPC’s Gujarat regional chairman, Dineshbhai Navadiya, shared at the event that the Gujarat customs department has been proactive in continuing import and export activities despite the challenges of the pandemic. Navadiya also shared that the GJEPC plans to meet with authorities to continue the discussion with Surat Customs regarding the operations of the Foreign Post Office.
