The GJEPC launched a Parichay Card in Kolkata and it will soon expand to cover the whole country

In order to create a database of jewellery industry workers to create a national classification and improve skill development and job opportunities, the GJEPC has launched a Parichay Card for the industry. The card was debuted in Kolkata and the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Suresh Prabhu, will launch it on a national scale towards the end of the month, as reported by ET Bureau.

The GJEPC is negotiating with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MoSDE) to create a national classification of workers in the industry using a Labour Management Information System (LMIS). The classification by segment is intended to provide workers with additional benefits under several MoSDE schemes.

The card’s national launch is intended to build upon the success of the Group Mediclaim Scheme launched by the GJEPC in 2015. The scheme, called “Swasthya Ratna”, provides health insurance to jewellery sector workers and has so far covered four lakh lives. The new database and smart card are designed to provide better healthcare services through optional insurance as well as the option for financial support from banks and financial institutions, and better job opportunities.

“The $40bn gem and jewellery industry, is heavily dependent on the karigars, artisans and the craftsmen of India,” said Pramod Kumar Agarwal, chairman of the GJEPC. “Today India has become global pioneer in the business of diamond processing, only because of these extremely talented and skilled workforce. As a token of appreciation and with the intention to give back to these precious jewels of the industry, the council has come forward for the betterment of these workforce.”
