The GJEPC is confident that the jewellery manufacturing skills and workforce possessed by India has the potential to turn the country into a global hub for jewellery repair. In order to work towards this goal, the traders’ body aims to create standard operating procedures for the industry to streamline operations and promote growth, the GJEPC reported on its website.

The recent session held in Delhi saw participants discuss the procedure for sending and receiving jewellery for repair, documentation required, and the valuation of the repaired goods. Stakeholders also discussed challenges faced and solutions for how to overcome them.

The meeting saw attendance from the chief commissioner of customs Roopam Kapoor and the GJEPC’s executive director Sabyasachi Ray among others. The Working Group of Customs is responsible for creating policies and procedures related to the customs clearance of goods and the GJEPC aims to lobby for businesses offering jewellery repair services to ensure that they benefit from favourable regulations.

“Overall, the meeting was productive and helped to identify key areas of focus for developing the SoP,” the GJEPC announced on its website. “The Working Group of Customs will continue to work closely with GJEPC and exporter members to develop a comprehensive SoP that meets the needs of all stakeholders and promotes the growth of the gem and jewellery industry.”
