The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council aims to make India the world's gem and jewellery repairing hub and is in discussions with the Commerce Ministry to develop policies to support this development.

The GJEPC plans to make India an international jewellery repair hub

The GJEPC is holding discussions with the Commerce Ministry to formulate policy facilitations in the Foreign Trade Policy 2021-26 for jewellery repair to make India an attractive destination for international businesses, the GJEPC announced on its website. The Commerce Ministry’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade will announce its new policies soon and the GJEPC is contributing to its repair policy for jewellery.

By promoting jewellery repairs in India to international jewellery manufacturers and retailers, the GJEPC stated that the skills of Indian artisans will put to good use for the international market. If international brands setup servicing hubs in India, this will create employment opportunities in the gem and jewellery industry and will promote the skills of Indian artisans internationally which could lead to further opportunities.

“There has been an ongoing, relentless and extensive support from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to transform this industry and make it a global leader in all its verticals,” said GJEPC chairman Colin Shah, the GJEPC reported.

“India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal, with his deep understanding of the challenges and pressing issues of the export sector, has been lending an empathetic ear to manufacturers in pursuit of their mission to grow the sectoral exports. The raft of favourable policy reforms announced in the recent Budget due to such strong support from Commerce Ministry further empowers the industry and puts it on a firm footing to capitalise on growth opportunities in the coming decade.”
