GIA holds Mumbai ceremony for jewellery design graduates

Gemological Institute of America’s Indian arm recently held a ceremony at its campus in Mumbai to congratulate its graduating students and bring together members of the jewellery industry. 

“As jewellery designers, we should think outside the box and also from the point of view of saleability,” said chief guest for the event, Designers of India director Shrusshti Sharma, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council reported on its website. “Coupled with a sound education and practical-oriented training, you are poised for achieving greater heights.”

The GIA’s ‘Jewelry Design’ course aims to train new jewellers to join the industry. The nine-week course covers gemstones and different metals and students create a portfolio which can be shown to potential employers. 

“Jewellery designing is an integral part of the gem and jewellery industry,” said the GIA’s senior director of education and market development Apoorva Deshingkar. “GIA Jewelry Design Certificate course enables our students to discover their creative expressions and build a name for themselves. Many jewellery manufacturers and retailers have expressed their desire to work with jewellery designers trained through the GIA way.”

“I have always been a design enthusiast,” said graduating student Khushi Solankia at the event. “So, when I decided to pursue jewellery designing, GIA was the first Institute that came to my mind. The course not only taught us about designing, but also about pricing. The factory visit gave us an opportunity to experience the practical aspects of jewellery manufacturing. After nine weeks, I feel completely ready to step into the industry.”
