Reliance Retail’s plan to acquire Future Retail may not be finalised next year, as court proceedings could last for many months.

As Amazon contests the planned Future-Reliance deal, potential proceedings in the Supreme Court may run into 2022, Supreme Court senior advocate, HP Ranina, told ET Now.

Despite being tentatively optimistic that the deal will go through in the end, Ranina shared that approaching numerous regulators to hear their verdicts will take time and these verdicts could also be challenged in court.

“I think this will drag on for a few more months and the matter ultimately will go to the Supreme Court,” said Ranina.

“Even this Delhi High Court verdict will be challenged in the Supreme Court by both parties if they feel it goes against them and it is going to delay the whole deal. But there is definitely going to be a delay. There is no way by which this deal can go through immediately.”

“I do not think it is possible in 2021,” said Ranina. “I can optimistically say that it may go through but in 2021, I do not see it going through at all.”
