Biyani recently spoke at the Business and Academia Conclave in Mumbai and stated that, although he plans to fully embrace the latest technology, the future on the e-commerce market could be less secure than many are counting on.

“I still believe that e-commerce won’t survive in India,” opined Biyani.

As the CEO of one of India’s largest retail businesses, and with a strong presence in the fashion industry through the Future Retail branch and its subsidiaries, Biyani’s opinions about the retail landscape are waited on by many.

It could be confusing to some that the head of a business that indeed relies on e-commerce would have such an opinion, but this is not the first time Biyani has voiced these sentiments. Moreover, he also tempered his statement by saying: “If technology has come in, we’ll have to adopt to technology; if something else comes in, [then] we’ll have to adopt that thing. I think for the longevity of an organisation, you’ll have to adapt to all the new things happening around you.”

“There has to be innovation in terms of how you do business at a lower cost,” said Biyani. “This doesn’t mean you don’t embrace technology. I think technology is a product that will be available off the shelves, but it’s not something that excites us. I think we will get all the technology available in the world.”

India’s e-commerce market is growing at a fast pace and many fashion brands are embracing the omni-channel strategy to drive growth. However, Biyani has posed the important question, is this sustainable?
