Flipkart opens new fulfilment centre in Dankuni, over half of customers now hail from non-metro areas
Flipkart has opened a new fulfilment centre in Dankuni, West Bengal to meet growing demand in the eastern region. The business has also reported that over 52% of its customers now come from tier 2 and 3 cities.
Flipkart’s new fulfilment centre in Dankuni will create almost 3,500 direct jobs and will enable the business to continue to support small and medium sized businesses in West Bengal, it said in a statement, ET Bureau reported. The new 2.2 lakh square-foot centre is now its second largest in the state as the eastern region is now one of the fastest growing areas for e-commerce business in India.
“The new facility in Dankuni will cater to the needs of both Flipkart and Myntra customers in the region,” said Flipkart’s senior vice president for supply chain, Hemant Badri, TNN reported.
“It will also help thousands of sellers offer a wider selection and enable faster deliveries of customer orders within the region and neighbouring states while also helping create national market access.”
The Dankuni centre brings Flipkart’s warehousing space total in West Bengal to over 10 lakh square feet. The centre is designed to serve a new cohort of first-time e-commerce customers from increasingly rural locations. Flipkart now counts over half of its customers as non-metro consumers and is expanding its services to cater to shoppers in tier 2 and 3 locations.
“Flipkart’s continued investment in the state is a testament to the enabling environment the state has helped create not just job opportunities but the safe way of deliveries for the consumers,” said West Bengal’s secretary for industry, commerce, and enterprises, Vandana Yadav, TNN reported. “We are hopeful that it will further create many more opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship.”
