Multi-brand e-commerce giant Flipkart has launched its first fulfilment centre dedicated to groceries in Lucknow. The approximately 50,000-square-foot space is expected to create 500 direct jobs in the region.

Flipkart’s new fulfilment centre in Lucknow will be a major employment generator, according to the business - Flipkart

Flipkart’s first grocery fulfilment centre in Lucknow is set to service the city itself, as well as Kanpur and Allahabad, the business said in a statement on Monday, the Press Trust of India reported. The centre solidifies Flipkart’s focus on groceries, the breakout online product category following the pan-India lockdown.

Along with around 500 direct jobs, the centre will create thousands of indirect job opportunities, according to the business. Flipkart will establish a supply chain around the fulfilment centre and will thus work with local transport contractors, security agencies, and staffing vendors among other businesses, the Press Trust of India reported.

“Uttar Pradesh has a dynamic industrial policy to help companies tap into the vibrant business ecosystem in the state,” said Uttar Pradesh’s Minister of Industries Satish Mahana.

“The opening of this centre is a testament to the continued faith businesses have on the potential of UP and its government to make it one of the fastest-growing states in the country.”

Flipkart has a strong presence in Uttar Pradesh with 190 facilities in the region and a network of around 18,000 sellers from the state on its e-commerce platform. Its new centre will be a boon to the local food processing industry, according to Walmart-owned Flipkart.
