E-commerce giant Flipkart launched its first grocery fulfilment centre in Assam and it will be run by an all-woman team of employees.

Flipkart aims to reach more shoppers in the northeast with its new fulfilment centre - Flipkart

The new fulfilment centre launched on April 8 and is located at Palasbari near Guwahati, the Economic Times reported. The Assam centre is the second all women-run centre Flipkart has launched following its first all-woman fulfilment centre in Coimbatore.

“The northeastern region has the highest conversion rate in terms of customers visiting our site, translating into purchase,” Flipkart’s vice-president, head of grocery Smrithi Ravichandran told the Press Trust of India. “We are seeking to further improve it with this grocery fulfilment centre. The fulfilment centre [in Assam] will be run by women and it is another step towards empowering women and creating a conducive and inclusive environment for everyone to grow.”

Prior to the Assam fulfilment centre, Flipkart serviced the northeastern region through its centre in Kolkata. The new fulfilment centre in Palasbari measures 1.23 lakh square feet and will provide 300 job opportunities in the area.

As well as servicing most of the northeastern region, the new centre will also enable Flipkart to source more of its groceries and personal care products from local producers, according to Ravichandran. Over the coming two to three months, Flipkart aims to bring products from the northeast to shoppers across the country.
