Walmart-owned e-commerce giant Flipkart has introduced a new medical insurance and family support programme for its over 15,000-strong team of full-time employees including unlimited medical cover.

Flipkart's new health insurance policy is a progressive step in Indian industry - Flipkart- Facebook

Full-time Flipkart employees in India will now be entitled to unlimited medical insurance as part of the business’ updated policy, TNN reported. The employees will have all medical and hospital expenses covered without having to pay a premium. The new policy is designed to run not only during the ongoing pandemic, but also beyond.

The new policy also includes a family support segment which will be implemented with retrospective effect from April 2020, irrespective of the reason of an employees’ death. The family of a deceased employee will receive a life cover at a value of five times the employees’ CTC as well as a notice-period settlement as per their contracts.

The new policy is a progressive one for Indian industry. Many workers have called for more support during the challenges of the pandemic and Flipkart’s move could push other large businesses to follow suit.

As many state governments relax their local lockdown regulations, Flipkart is again able to deliver its full product selection in numerous locations. The business recently announced that its upcoming IPO could be as soon as the fourth quarter of the calendar year 2021.
