After introducing a Hindi language interface for its e-commerce platform last year, Flipkart has further diversified its language options to appeal to a wider demographic, the Walmart-owned business announced on Wednesday.

The new interfaces are designed to address the ‘pain points’ of consumers transitioning to e-commerce, the business said in its statement, the Press Trust of India reported.

“New language interfaces of Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada along with Hindi (introduced last year) will further improve users' e-commerce journeys by making it simpler and more personal,” said Flipkart’s chief product and technology officer, Jeyandran Venugopal, the Press Trust of India reported.

The business based its new language interfaces in part on the results of an ethnographic survey it carried out in cities including Salem, Visakhapatnam, and Mysore, to gain consumer insights from South India, where its business is growing. The business translated over 5.4 million words into three languages for the project.

Flipkart is onboarding more customers from Tier 2, 3, and 4 cities as rural shoppers embrace online shopping and the business targets this emerging market. Customers from these locations are more likely to prefer local language options so Flipkart’s new interfaces show its continued focus on expanding into more rural markets.
