Flipkart launched its Big Billion Days sale for the holiday season on October 10 and it will run until October 14.

“Ensuring that our customers have a seamless shopping experience, we want the economy too, to benefit from the increased activity,” the business’ CEO, Kalyan Krishnamurthy, told the Press Trust of India. “By generating employment and enabling our sellers to scale their businesses during this time, we’re playing an important role in driving the industry and subsequently, the economy.”

Flipkart stated that as well as the 30,000 extra jobs it created for the sale season, it expects that its seller partners to have added over five lakh indirect jobs at their own locations. Competitor Amazon India announced that it had added 50,000 seasonal positions for the sale season which sees the two businesses go directly head-to-head to achieve the highest revenue total.

The Press Trust of India reported that Flipkart’s seasonal positions are spread over its entire supply chain including in warehouses, delivery hubs, and mother hubs. Indirect jobs are mostly for packaging and warehouse management.

RedSeer has predicted that over 20 million shoppers will purchase items this sale season amounting to over $3 billion (Rs 19,958 crore). The September-November period usually generates the majority of the annual sales of e-commerce firms like Amazon India and Flipkart and so the results of this weekend’s sale will have a large bearing on these businesses’ annual revenue totals.
