Flipkart is betting big on luggage and travel accessories sales as demand increases country-wide and is hoping to overtake Amazon India in the sector by the end of the year.

Amazon India currently has the largest market share online in the luggage and travel accessories category after launching the category in 2014 but Flipkart is confident that, with a strong focus on the sector, it can overtake Amazon by the end of the year. “Right now, the gap between the market share of Amazon and Flipkart is marginal,” Flipkart’s Vice President for Fashion, Home, and Furniture, Rishi Vasudev, told ET Bureau. “We expect the market share to tilt in our favour to 60-40 by the end of this year.”

In order to increase its market share in the luggage and travel accessory sector, Flipkart has launched and will continue to launch exclusive offers and products from global brands. Flipkart is also working on promoting its private label for luggage.

Flipkart and Amazon India’s battle for the top spot in the Indian online market has become even more heightened since Walmart announced its buy out of Flipkart meaning that both business will be US owned. The deal is expected to be wrapped up by the end of the year although there have also been numbers protests.
