Flipkart acquires land in Gurgaon to set up new fulfilment centre

E-commerce giant Flipkart, owned by U.S. business Walmart, has acquired land measuring 140 acres in Manesar, Gurgaon, where it plans to set up its largest fulfilment centre in Asia.

As Flipkart experiences increased customer orders in the wake of Covid-19, the business plans to add to its logistics infrastructure with a new fulfilment centre in Gurgaon, ET Bureau reported. The land acquisition has been approved by the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation at a total of Rs 432 crore ($64.9 million).
 
The initial construction phase for the project is expected to begin in 2022 and the work will be divided into several phases to be carried over three to five years. The development is expected to cost around Rs 3,500 crore and will create over 12,000 job opportunities in the state.

“Flipkart’s focused investments in its supply chain have been pivotal to customer experience offerings that have helped build trust in e-commerce,” said Flipkart’s chief corporate affairs officer, Rajneesh Kumar, ET Bureau reported.

“We will continue to strengthen this infrastructure and create market opportunities for lakhs of sellers and [micro, small, and medium enterprises] MSMEs from the state while creating new livelihood opportunities and jobs.”
