The FDA raided Nykaa’s Bhiwandi warehouse on November 15 following a tip-off, TNN reported. The raid found products manufactured by Mumbai-based Bellezza Italia, which the FDA seized because they had been manufactured without a valid licence.

“Nykaa is a multi-brand platform with over a thousand brands manufactured in India and internationally,” said Nykaa in a statement after the raid, TNN reported. “The FDA brought it to our attention that the manufacturing licence of one of our partner brands had expired. We delisted this brand and all its products from our website and app with immediate effect. We expect all brands registered to follow policies and guidelines set by authorities. Nykaa strives to ensure strict quality control measures and will continue to strengthen these processes going forward to ensure the best experience for our customers.”

The FDA’s commissioner Pallavi Darade said that Nykaa, and all online beauty retailers, should check the products they are selling before listing them online. “Importantly, the products were not available in the open market and only on the e-commerce website,” said Darade.

The seized Bellezza Italia products included lipstick, highlighter, and eyeliner among others goods, TNN reported. The FDA stated that the business’ licence had been surrendered in May 2018 but the manufacturing date on the seized makeup was June 2019.
