Currently, e-commerce contributes around 2 percent with $1.2 billion to the overall FMCG sales in India.

E-commerce’s contribution to sales is expected to grow on the back of growing smartphone usage, increased data consumption coupled with efforts by large companies to sell their products online.

Commenting on the report, Sharang Pant, head-retail measurement services at Nielsen in a statement said, “E-commerce has seen a transformative journey and is now a $1.2 billion industry growing from 0.5 percent in 2016 to 2 percent in 2019, and slated to be 5 percent in 2022. This is within half the time that brick and mortar retail took to evolve.”

Prasun Basu, South Asia zone president at Nielsen added, “India’s FMCG industry is now making its presence felt in the e-commerce channel - appealing to consumers’ need for convenience, and in sync with increasing smartphone and internet penetration. Nielsen India has launched a specific E-Trak index that will now measure FMCG consumer offtake in the e-commerce space."

The research by Nielsen also revealed that metros lead the e-commerce FMCG race with a 6 percent contribution from the channel to total FMCG sales. Personal care contributed 40 percent with strong sales from skin creams, shampoo among other products.
