Employee productivity to decrease this year due to Cyber Monday

Published
Nov 28, 2016

Black Friday was neither a hit nor a miss this year. Many analysts and retailers expected a much slower selling day in comparison to previous years and an increased focus on online sales. Surveys showed that shoppers planned to shop online instead of instore, and many retailers accommodated the shoppers by launching deals as early as Thanksgiving Day.

Online sales were previously saved for Cyber Monday, the Monday after Thanksgiving, but retailers kicked off their heavy discounts almost an entire week prior to Cyber Monday. Though the deals started early, Cyber Monday is still expected to pull in many sales, even from employees on the clock.

RetailMeNot and Kelton Global released a survey on Sunday that showed that as many as 94% employed customers plan to shop during the workday. Work productivity is expected to drop once again this year due to Cyber Monday.

"Employees are willing to go to great lengths to find the best deals on everything from their holiday list," said Sara Skirboll, the shopping and trends expert for RetailMeNot. "According to our survey, we know that many shoppers plan to spend as many as four hours looking for Cyber Monday deals."

According to the survey, many shoppers will shift their workday to make time for shopping. 47% of respondents said they will leave work early, 26% will take a long lunch, 13% will go to work late, and 22% will move meetings to make time for shopping. 21% of the respondents also said they would be willing to get caught shopping online.

The survey also showed that computers and electronics will have the highest discounts this year followed by designer clothing and teen clothing, then books and news, and finally home and garden. In 2015, RetailMeNot saw higher discounts on travel, health and beauty, accessories and shoes.

In addition, 40% of respondents plan to compare prices using their mobile device and 42% plan to use their mobile device to search for deals. Respondents also expect to use their smartphones for more than just shopping, with 26% of respondents planning to send holiday greetings and 15% of respondents planning to track or check in for an upcoming flight.

Reuters reported on Friday that, according to Adobe Digital Index, US online shopping reached $1.13 billion by Thanksgiving evening and Friday online sales were $1.65 billion by 1pm EDT. Cyber Monday sales may surpass last year’s figures with shoppers focusing more on online shopping over brick-and-mortar shopping.
