Items such as t-shirts, headbands, caps, and flags made to show support for the various political parties participating in India’s ongoing general election have proven highly popular, especially on B2B platforms, ET Bureau reported. The high demand for such items has caused prices to increase and most online purchases are being made through the B2B channel due to high order volumes that will be sold on offline.

“It is quite a unique standpoint and needs a special mention, that in March 2019, the platform saw a substantial increase in number of enquiries of BJP flags, t-shirts and Congress Fatkas,” a spokesperson for the B2B e-commerce platform IndiaMart told ET Bureau. The business reported a 100 percent rise in demand for election merchandise.

Another B2B e-commerce site, ExportersIndia, reported a 40 percent increase in demand for election clothing and merchandise compared to the previous general election in 2014. The business’ vice president Ankit Gupta reported that t-shirts with logos and slogans for different political parties are some of the most popular items.

Sarees showing larger than life images of Narendra Modi have already circulated around local bazaars and, this general election, fashion has played a larger part than ever. Modi himself has become known for his “Modi jackets” and these too have become a symbol of political affiliation for some. The Khadi and Village Industries Commission reported high sales of its Modi jackets in its brick-and-mortar stores.

The Indian general election is currently in full swing and the results will come in on May 23. Over 900 million people are eligible to vote in these elections.
