ED asks Interpol again to issue a Red Corner Notice against jeweller Mehul Choksi

Published
Sep 11, 2018

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has reminded Interpol of its request for a Red Corner Notice (RCN) to be issued against Mehul Choksi of Gitanjali Gems as it pushes forward with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case.

The ED reminded Interpol of its request for a RCN to be issued against Mehul Choksi - Gitanjali Jewels- Facebook

The ED has been consistently asking Interpol to issue a RCN against Choksi but so far Interpol has not responded. On Monday, September 10, the ED reported that it had again contacted Interpol regarding this.

Although it is still possible to initiate extradition discussions against Choksi without a RCN, having one would give Indian authorities’ demands greater weight and would allow them to demand Choksi’s arrest and detention in Antigua before extradition.

Mehul Choksi, the promoter of Gitanjali Gems, is still refusing to return to India to stand trial for his alleged part in the over Rs 13,500 crore ($2 billion) bank fraud at the Punjab National Bank (PNB) along with his nephew Nirav Modi of the eponymous jewellery label. After being located in Antigua where he has taken citizenship, Choksi has still refused to return to India as he has voiced fears of a “mob lynching."

Antiguan authorities have confirmed that Choksi took citizenship there before news of the fraud broke and stated that authorities did carry out proper background checks into Choksi before granting him citizenship.

Indian authorities are currently in the process of searching for any charges or investigations into Choksi or his businesses during the time he was applying for Antiguan citizenship as, if this was the case, he could be reprimanded for lying to authorities.
