E-commerce marketplaces witnessed a slowdown in sales in states like Uttar Pradesh, the Northeast, including Assam, parts of Karnataka and the National Capital Region (NCR).

The e-commerce firms have taken an 18 to 20 percent hit on their volumes in December 2019, the Business Standard reported citing anonymous sources.

Earlier in December, the government shut mobile internet services in some parts of the country after protests broke out against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

December is an important month for e-commerce marketplaces, which typically generate maximum sales during this period from festive season and year-end sales.

However, due to protests and internet shutdowns this year, there has been a dent in sales for e-commerce firms.

“We don’t know when these protests would stop and a number of other isues might also come up, but banning the internet is not the best solution. The authorities are using it very frequently. This is certainly not a sustainable model and they have to find other ways to take care of security,” an anonymous source was quoted as saying to the Business Standard.

Many e-commerce companies have already approached the government with their grievances, saying that the shutdowns are affecting their business and hoping that the issue will be resolved soon, bringing normalcy back to the businesses.
