E-commerce: 1 trillion euros in B2C sales for 2013

Next year online B2C sales should surpass the symbolic mark of 1 trillion euros (in short scale), according to IMRG (Interactive Media in Retail Group), a British association specialized in online retailing. The group moved up its projections by one year after initially predicting the event to happen in 2014 — a new sign of the sector's strong growth.

This “trillion” in sales was announced as part of IMRG's e-Commerce Overview 2012. The group said sales grew 20% worldwide last year, reaching 690 billion euros (£599bn, $961bn), while the number of Internet users increased to 2.2 billion. Moreover, the number of users should rise to 3.5 billion in the next two years, the equivalent of 50% of the world's population. This represents an audience increase that IMRG says will lead to a strong rise in purchases.

The United States remains the most important e-commerce market, ahead of the United Kingdom and Japan, with estimated growth in sales between 10 and 15% in all three countries. The Chinese market contributed its share with an increase of 130%. In Europe, the strongest growth was seen in France, Italy, Spain, Russia, Turkey and Poland. In Latin America, Brazil and Mexico dominated e-commerce growth while Israel and the UAE led the list in the Middle East.
