Dior/Marc Jacobs : how rumors start

Published
Mar 11, 2012

At the time of this writing, the House of Dior has made no formal announcements about its fate, but this Wednesday, March 7 saw speculation rising again, with all eyes again turned to Marc Jacobs. It had been brought up once, but talk of the possible transfer of the important American designer to LVMH’s other group had subsided a few months ago. But the timing last Wednesday was a great breeding ground for rumors to grow again. Louis Vuitton opened the day with a resounding bang of a show. The dazzling show put together by Marc Jacobs and his team, bringing the models into a locomotive and a wagon built for the occasion, left no detail unaccounted for, from the smoke effects to the bearers of bags and luggage for the ladies. The designer’s moving tribute must have intrigued some observers, if subsequent events are any indication.

Some hours later, Marc Jacobs was a viewer at the Miu Miu fashion show, and his appearance seemed to trigger the rumor mill’s whispers about his near future ... It was also the British edition of Vogue which first ventured onto this dangerous ground more than a year in advance with its article asking: "Incredible turnaround at Dior?" The editors must have believed that an announcement was imminent.

Perhaps because another event marked the day, namely the exhibition about the crossed paths of Louis Vuitton, the founder of the luggage giant, and its current creative director, who has held this post for the past 15 years. Because another event was punctuate the day, namely the opening of the exhibition about the destinies of Louis Vuitton, the luggage founder, and his current creative director, serving for 15 years. If LVMH has said many times that the Exposition des Arts Decoratifs is not a retrospective, timing leading to an announcement of his transfer from one of the group’s houses to another at the launch of this tribute may have seemed perfect.

This is an exciting time, then, for both Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton, whom many have called a genius. If some are content to live in the present moment, others are noting impatiently that one could not ask for a more elegant changing of the guard. A train stops, the journey's end for Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs, who is now bound for another destination? It is such a good story, no wonder it has some people’s imaginations running wild.
