Designer Satya Paul passes away
Fashion designer Satya Paul passed away on January 6 in Coimbatore at age 79. The designer had made a 35 year contribution to the Indian fashion industry.
On news of Paul's passing, tributes from the fashion industry and spiritual community have begun to pour in, the Times of India reported. Paul had been recuperating at the Isha Yoga Centre near Coimbatore from a stroke he experienced in December.
Satya Paul’s brand posted a tribute to the late designer on its Instagram. Spiritual teacher Sadhguru also paid tribute to the designer on Twitter and described him as an example of “immeasurable passion."
“My uncle, Satya Paul, took up textiles and fashion,” said his nephew and fellow designer, Divyam Mehta, ET Bureau reported.
“He was always very forward in his thinking and when I told him that I want to pursue fashion designing, he stood by me, guiding me in the right direction. He did not want me to be his shadow, but he wanted me to carve my own path.”
Satvinder Paul Nanda launched eponymous brand Satya Paul in 1985 and the brand quickly became known for its sarees. The brand retails across India, as well as internationally, and is placed in the luxury segment of the market.
In June, 2020, Satya Paul appointed designer Rajesh Pratap Singh as chief creative director for the brand. Singh is currently responsible for the brands artistic direction and the first collection he worked on was for autumn/winter 2020- 2021, which is in stores now.
