Diamond business De Beers announced its plan to launch its new trusted source programme, ‘Code of Origin’, as a pilot in India to cover diamonds from 0.08 carat and below and trace their origin.

De Beers new programme will pilot in India and increase traceability

De Beers will certify its diamonds with ‘Code of Origin’ certificates for its India pilot programme and this will ensure that the stones are both natural and garnered in a conflict-free manner, the business announced at its recent event in Mumbai. The certification will also show that the diamonds were discovered by De Beers in Botswana, Canada, Namibia, or South Africa. The programme is also an employment-generation initiative and will be scaled up in 2022, according to De Beers.

The business also took the occasion to release its De Beers Forevermark Diamond Jewellery Verification Report. This traces the origin of the entire jewellery product, not just its diamonds.

“Our country has the potential and fuel to impact the global diamond business,” said De Beers Forevermark’s managing director Sachin Jain, at a post-event press conference, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council reported.

“If we tap this opportunity well with transparency, keeping our consumers in the forefront, the possibility to grow the natural diamond business is huge. We, at De Beers, are taking some important steps to harness this opportunity.”

De Beers held its three-day 10th Annual Forum in Mumbai from August 24 to 26 with a hybrid in-person and virtual event. The event also celebrated reaching eight lakh partners, diamantaires, manufacturers and patrons. The theme of the 2021 Annual Forum was ‘Make Life Brilliant’.
