The fast moving consumer goods business Dabur aims to become a fully plastics waste free business by the end of March 2021 by collecting and recycling 100 percent of the plastic waste it creates across India.

Dabur, which produces a large number of personal and beauty care products, plans to collect, process, and then recycle around 20 million kilograms of plastic waste, TNN reported. The business believes that, by collecting back and recycling the plastic waste it creates through its product packaging, it can become plastics waste neutral.

“It’s an ambitious target, but we have already started working towards it,” the business’ CEO Mohit Malhotra told TNN. “We rolled out this pilot plastic recycling initiative last year in six states. Fiscal year 2018-19 was the first full year of its roll-out and we have collected, processed and recycled nearly 4,000 MT or four million kilograms of post-consumer plastic waste from these six states.”

Dabur first piloted this programme in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Punjab. During the current financial year, Dabur will extend the programme to 25 Indian states and then in the next financial year, aim to have the strategy firmly in place across the country.

As not all plastic can be recycled into more plastic, other types will be sent to waster-to-energy plants and to cement plants for use. To achieve this, Dabur is working with the Central Pollution Control Board. The business is accompanying this programme with educational activities to promote recycling in schools.
