Court orders Topshop to pay Rihanna's legal bill

British fashion giant Topshop has been ordered to pay Rihanna's legal bill, estimated to reach about £1m, after it lost a copyright case against the singer, the BBC reported.

It was in 2013 that Rihanna sued Topshop for £3.3m for selling a T-shirt with an image taken from the shoot of one of her music videos without her consent. The High Court found Topshop guilty, and the verdict was recently upheld by the Courts of Appeal, which also ruled that Topshop has to pay Rihanna's legal costs.

Topshop, which had legal costs of £350,000 for the case, had asked three court judges to overturn the order to pay Rihanna's legal bill. However, the court has judged that Topshop has to pay it, even though the size of the bill was deemed "startling" and "somewhat surprising" by the judge in the original case.
