Apparel retailer Citykart plans to open a further 50 stores across India in the coming two years as it focuses on the Odisha, West Bengal, and Northeast regions for future brick-and-mortar expansion.
“We started from Uttar Pradesh, moving to Bihar and are currently targeting to expand in Odisha, West Bengal and the Northeast,” Citykart’s founder and CEO Sudhanshu Agarwal told Images Fashion Bureau in an interview. “This expansion has given us the opportunity to be successfully present in Tier II and III cities with Tier IV cities being our next target. Our aim is to open 50 new stores in the next two years.”
The business is also investing in technology and staff training as it expands. “As consumers’ exposure to digital experiences increase- from ordering to delivery and from billing to payment- a frictionless experience is becoming a basic … expectation,” said Agarwal. Citing a lack of trained personnel in rural towns, Agarwal also said that the business trains staff every quarter.
Citykart launched in January 2016 as a value family fashion retailer. The business focuses on rural locations where the apparel market is largely unorganised. Since its launch, the brand has opened 48 stores in 41 Indian cities. The brand has an average store size of 8,000 to 13,500 square feet and retails clothing for men, women, and children as well as accessories.
