Chungtia village in Nagaland aims to be Eri silk hub

The Chungtia village council in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district has initiated a project called Eri Silk Development for Women Empowerment (ESDWE) to develop the village as a silk production centre. 



The project is being coordinated by the Central Muga Eri Research and Training Institute at Lahdoigarh in Assam’s Jorhat and sponsored by the Central Silk Board.

The ministry has sanctioned Rs 18 crore ($2.6 million) from fiscal 2018-19 to 2020-2021 for the project and has made the Chungtia village council the executing agency, said nodal officer of the project Imotemjen Lkr.

The project carries different levels of silk production chain that include covering 300 farmers, tools, equipment, silk development facilities and manufacturing unit of raw materials to refine products and lastly marketing platform, according to media reports from northeast India.

On June 7, 150 women trained by scientists from the institute received their certificates.
