The international auction house Christie’s auction titled “Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence” took place on June 19 in New York, US, following an exhibition of the array of Indian art and fine jewellery to be auctioned that day. The auction was organised by Christie’s jewellery and world art departments and the art advisory business The Fine Art Group.

The auction drew registered bidders from 45 countries across five continents and 93 percent of items were sold by lot and 92 percent sold by value. This auction achieved the highest total bids of any Indian and Mughal art and objects auction and second highest total for a private jewellery collection.

Items sold in the auction included an antique imperial spinel, pearl and emerald necklace, which sold for $3 million and the Golconda Diamond Rivière Necklace, from the collection of the Nizams of Hyderabad, which sold for $2 million. Jewellery by Cartier also featured in the auction which lasted 12 hours.

“We are very honoured to have been entrusted with this magnificent and diverse selection of jewels, art and objects from the larger Al Thani Collection,” said Christie’s CEO Guillaume Cerutti, according to the firm’s press release. “The strong results today, after twelve hours of non-stop bidding, in front of a packed room and with phone and online bidders from all over the world, reflect the exceptional quality of this special collection and position it among the most storied private collections ever featured at auction.”
