Amazon India Fashion Week (AIFW) Spring-Summer 2017 opened with a documentary aimed at the revival of chanderi weaves from the Chanderi town of Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday.

The documentary, shot by designer Samant Chauhan, was commissioned by Sunil Sethi, President of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI).

The opening show saw 16 designers coming together to create four ensembles each, to encourage designers to incorporate chanderi into their lexicon and boost the languishing crafts sector.

Leading designer Anita Dongre says the intention behind all of her designs is to popularise the versatility of traditional fabrics, and she is happy that this time she has experimented with Chanderi.

"It is very interesting with 16 designers coming together and each one of them showing their interpretation of Chanderi. It's a traditional fabric, generally worn in sarees. I have given it a contemporary, global look so, I have used it in international silhouettes", said Dongre.
