Carrefour has strengthened its beauty /hygiene segment by launching "Les Cosmétiques Design Paris," a new brand of cosmetics and beauty products that will be sold exclusively in its stores. "We designed a brand of cosmetics that is broad in range, economical and responds to the needs of the majority of women," says Melanie Jaffredo, brand manager of "Les Cosmétiques Design Paris."

Indeed the brand offers a virtual sprawl, consisting of nearly 650 products divided into several different lines. Essentials is an online family of 79 products whose formulas were tested under medical supervision for daily hygiene (shampoo for very dry and curly hair sells for 1.45 EUR/500 ml.). Nectar of Nature is a line of floral scents consisting of 150 products, 20 of which are organic (fig body balm 200 ml. sells for 4.40 Euros). Finally, the skin care line Hydra Science was created for three facial skin types: Science (mattifying cream Hydra Pure SPF 15, 4 Euros/50ml), Age Science (from 7.90 Euros) and Kera Science (from 2.40 Euros).

The Ultimate line, in turn, consists of Body Ultimate, a home spa line (traditional black soap scrub with eucalyptus 10.85 Euros/150 grams), Ultimate Sun, a line of self-tanning products and Ultimate Age, a line of serums (starting from 10.90 Euros) and, finally, two lines of makeup, Pro's and Pro's Couture for day and night (6.50 Euros for a long-wearing lipstick).

The products were developed with the help of various experts and manufactured in Europe (30% are made in France) and more products, such as a men’s line, are planned for eventual development as well. "Carrefour already has its own beauty and skincare brands such as Carrefour Cosmétiques and Carrefour Discount. To create Cosmétiques Design Paris, we have reworked existing formulas and developed new ones with the aid of major laboratories such as Boots. Ultimately, only the Carrefour Discount line should remain on the shelves alongside Cosmétiques Design Paris."

Cosmétiques Design Paris will arrive in the 4,000 or so Carrefour stores in France (Carrefour City, Carrefour, Carrefour Market…) as of March 14 for makeup and May 23 for all other lines of the brand. At the end of the year, the brand’s stores in Italy, Spain and Belgium will have the Cosmétiques Design Paris product line on their shelves and in 2013, so will all of its Asian and U.S. stores.

With Cosmétiques Design Paris, Carrefour’s beauty and skin care products will go from accounting for 10% to 30% of its total product offering, without reducing the number of brands in the line. The goal is to boost the range of products in a segment that represents “only” 5 and 10% of Carrefour’s total revenues.

It should also be noted, that to announce the arrival of Cosmétiques Design Paris, Carrefour plans to launch, as of March 20th, a television and print media campaign announcing the launch, while the Cosmétiques de Paris website should be launched soon as well.
