Carlyle Group names former Wal-Mart President and CEO to executive position

Global alternative asset manager Carlyle Group on Thursday announced that Mike Duke, former President and CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, has joined the firm as an Operating Executive in the Global Consumer & Retail group. He began his duties in mid-April.

"Mr. Duke will provide strategic guidance to Carlyle professionals throughout the investment process and advise portfolio company executives on management, operational, branding and growth strategies," the company said in a press release.

Before joining Carlyle, Duke held the position of President and CEO of Wal-Mart, which he joined in 1995, from 2009 to 2014. He served as the Vice Chairman of the company from 2005 to 2009 with responsibility for Walmart International. He will continue to serve as a member of the Board of Directors.

Since its inception, Carlyle,  a global alternative asset manager with $194 billion of assets under management, has invested approximately $12 billion of equity in 70 transactions in the consumer and retail space, including Dunkin’ Brands, philosophy, CVC, NBTY, Beats, Vogue and Acosta.
