The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced on August 20 that it has sent an official extradition request to authorities in the UK requesting that the jewellery tycoon Nirav Modi be transported to India after his presence there was confirmed.

On Monday, ANI News Flash tweeted that UK authorities had confirmed Nirav Modi’s presence in the country. CBI officials corroborated this and confirmed that an official extradition request was sent to the relevant UK authorities.

Nirav Modi, who is accused of being a major part of the Rs 13,500 crore ($2 billion) fraud at the Punjab National Bank has been out of India since he fled the country before the scandal broke in spring. Despite an array of official notices demanding he return to India to stand trial for one of the largest frauds in India’s banking history, Modi has so far refused to do so. Modi has been summoned to a Mumbai court for September 25 along with his brother and sister.

The extradition request was made against Modi after a Red Corner Notice (RCN) was issued by Interpol at the CBI’s request last month. Modi’s Uncle Mehul Choksi is also outside of India and is refusing to return. Choksi has been located in Antigua where he has taken citizenship and Indian authorities are in touch with the county’s relevant authorities to try and secure his extradition.
