CAIT demands immediate action against Flipkart, Amazon

Published

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has demanded immediate government action against e-commerce platforms Flipkart and Amazon, and a number of others, for alleged regulation violations.

CAIT has urged the government to investigate Amazon and Flipkart again - Archiv

CAIT has accused Flipkart, Amazon, Zomato, and Swiggy of violating the mandatory display of country of origin and manufacturer and seller details on products sold through their respective e-commerce portals. By allegedly violating the Consumers Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 among other regulations, CAIT has argued that these foreign-owned businesses are causing great harm to Indian businesses, as well as consumers, Indo-Asian News Service reported.

“It is a case of daylight robbery of e-commerce entities in India and therefore demand immediate action against the erring e-commerce portals and online mechanism providers,” said CAIT in a statement, IANS reported.

“It is a pity that particularly in e-commerce every guidelines, rules and regulations, laws and policies are being flouted openly and no department has so far taken any cognisance of compliance issues resulting in a highly vitiated and mess like e-commerce trade of India,” said CAIT.

CAIT has written to the minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, to implore him to address the matter. The traders’ body has long criticised U.S. business Amazon and Flipkart, owned by U.S. business, Walmart, for their business practices in India. Other complaints include alleged deep-discounting, violating foreign direct investment regulations, and damaging the livelihoods of Indian traders.
