The Confederation of All India Traders called U.S.-owned e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart “economic terrorists” on December 1 and asked the government to take investigative action as its pan-India protests continue.

“These companies can easily be termed as economic terrorists and a major roadblock in making India a $5 trillion economy vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” said CAIT in a statement, the Press Trust of India reported. “We expect the government to take immediate action against Amazon and Flipkart and either they should follow the policy or wind up their business activities from India."

A spokesperson for Flipkart responded to CAIT’s statement: “It is unfortunate that some fringe organisations with vested interests keep peddling their agenda,” the Press Trust of India reported. The spokesperson argued that Flipkart’s e-commerce business will in fact help contribute to growing India’s economy and insisted that Flipkart adheres strictly to foreign direct investment regulations in India. Amazon India has not yet made a statement on the claims.

CAIT’s main complaint against Amazon and Flipkart is that the businesses are harming local Indian traders by offering deep discounts on products which it terms “predatory pricing”. CAIT believes that the businesses are harming micro, small, and medium enterprises, a sector of businesses that the Union Government has turned its focus to for economic growth. CAIT has demanded a government investigation into the businesses and will continue its protests into 2020.
