Brown Boy, launched by former-banker Prateek Kayan in 2014, is now certified by the international animal rights organisation PETA as a sustainable fashion brand. The brand’s collection of t-shirts and casual wear is made from 100 percent certified organic cotton in order to avoid the environmental harm caused by chemical dyes and production techniques.

“It was learning at every step and it still continues,” Kayan told The Better India about his business practices in an interview. “It was at that point that I saw the dark reality of the trade. Among other things, it was the trend of unsustainable fast fashion encouraging modern-day slavery that pushed me to start a new discourse. I chose to not follow the herd into an unethical supply chain, breeding insatiable greed, and instead started a brand which redefines fashion in a sustainable way.”

As well as using environmentally friendly textiles, the brand also pays its garment makers fair wages. The brand also pays manufacturers’ house rent, holidays, subsidies, overtime, and medical insurance as well as paying money into their social security and pension funds. The business also covers employees’ transport costs to the factory and pays employees’ children’s school fees, Kayan told The Better India.
