British authorities confirm Nirav Modi is in UK
British authorities have informed Indian authorities that Nirav Modi is currently living in the UK. The National Central Bureau of Manchester located Modi following an investigation.
"In August 2018, the government sent two requests, one from the CBI [Central Bureau of Investigation] and the other from the Enforcement Directorate, to the authorities of the UK seeking the extradition of Nirav Modi to India," the Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh told the Rajya Sabha (Council of States). Singh was responding to a question on the matter, reported the Press Trust of India.
The National Central Bureau of Manchester was the authority that contacted Indian agencies implying that Modi could be in the north of the country. The bureau told Indian authorities that Modi was found following an investigation.
Singh also stated that Modi’s UK extradition request is presently under consideration in the UK. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had contacted a number of European countries in its search for Modi.
The jewellery tycoon Nirav Modi has been outside India since before the fraud scandal broke in spring 2018 and has thus far refused to return to stand trial with his lawyer citing fears for his life as the reason. Modi is accused along with his Uncle of committing a fraud so great at the Punjab National Bank that it has been hailed as the largest in India’s banking history.
