Taking place on Tuesday 7th December at the Savoy Theatre in London, the British Fashion Awards 2010 has announced its first winner. Already four time winner of British Designer of the Year, Lee Alexander McQueen received this year’s award for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design.

Lee Alexander McQueen: winner of this year’s Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design award

This special award celebrates McQueen’s extraordinary career and exceptional impact on global fashion. Harold Tillman, CBE, Chairman of the BFC, commented, “The Outstanding Achievement Award celebrates the exceptional talent of an individual who has contributed to the British fashion industry both internationally, and here in the UK throughout their career. There was only one person we felt we could recognize with this award this year – Lee McQueen.”

Since 1989, the British Fashion Awards has been celebrating the contributions of British people to the international fashion scene. The evening is attended by the most influential industry leaders, designers, retailers, models, celebrities and media to celebrate the best in British fashion.

To commemorate Lee’s life and celebrate this award, the ceremony opened with a film featuring Lee’s most iconic pieces directed by Nick Knight, styled by Edward Enninful and soundtrack by Bjork. The film featured iconic pieces from Lee's career from the Alexander McQueen archive.

Other awards to be unveiled include Designer Brand, disputed between Burberry, Mulberry, Pringle of Scotland and Victoria Beckham, as well as this year’s Model award, going to either David Gandy, Lara Stone or Rosie Huntington-Whiteleyand.

Designer of the Year, the ultimate honour, recognises a leading British designer who has directed the shape of fashion in the past year and elevated their international reputation. The award is hotly contested this season with Christopher Kane, Erdem and Phoebe Philo.

Nominations for awards are made by key opinion formers within the industry, where winners are then selected by panels of leading British and international media and buyers. Remaining results will be published very shortly.
