BigBasket evaluates potential data breach
Nov 9, 2020
Online fast moving consumer goods retailer BigBasket is evaluating a potential data breach of over 20 million users, following reports by U.S.-based online intelligence business Cyble.
Cyble discovered a data breach on BigBasket’s e-commerce store on October 30, and reported the breach to the Indian business, giving a window of time before sharing the findings publicly, ET Bureau reported. Cycle believes the breach occurred on October 14 and that BigBasket customer data is being sold on the dark web.
“The leak contains a database portion... containing close to 20 million user data,” wrote Cyble in a blog post on Saturday.
“More specifically, this includes full names, email IDs, password hashes, pin, contact numbers, full addresses, date of birth, location, and IP addresses of login among many others.”
BigBasket has announced that it is currently looking into the potential data breach. The business said it is confident that customer payment information is secure.
As the pan-India lockdown and continued safety regulations have led to increased online shopping, this in turn makes cyber security an even greater issue. Consumer trust is an important aspect of securing online customers and data breaches could harm customer sentiment.
