BigBasket launched a large-scale brick-and-mortar store in Hyderabad to pilot its new retail model in the city on December 28. The multi-brand fast moving consumer goods retailer plans to subsequently take the concept to other metros.

“This is not a normal supermarket as there will he no tellers to do the billing,” said BigBasket’s co-founder SV Sudhakar, TNN reported. “Technology will enable self-billing by customers.” As its first large-scale store, BigBasket is treating the launch as a pilot programme.

The Hyderabad store currently retails around 4,000 products spanning product categories including foods, personal care goods, and lifestyle accessories. Although a large number of goods, it is significantly less than the 50,000 products currently available on BigBasket’s e-commerce store.

BigBasket first tried out its self service store concept in Bengaluru in 2021 with a number of small outlets. Following the results of the Hyderabad large-scale store launch, the business plans to open similar large-scale, self-service stores in Bengaluru and Kolkata. Following this, BigBasket then plans to open stores in other metro locations.

Over the coming two or three years, BigBasket plans to launch around 400 supermarkets across India’s eight to 10 largest cities to reach customers who do not usually shop online, ET Bureau reported. The business, acquired by Tata Group in 2021, aims to tap into the growing demand for branded FMCG products in India.
