U.S.-based Indian designer Bibhu Mohapatra has created a fashion film to launch his spring/summer 2021 collection. For the film, Mohapatra was inspired by late Indian- Hungarian artist, Amrita Sher Gil.

Mohapatra presented his spring/summer 2021 womenswear collection, “in honour of Amrita Sher Gil and all the fearless artists who dare to dream,” he announced at the end of his first digital showcase, published on YouTube. Mohapatra’s collection showcased his signature mix of Indian traditional wear and classic American style, with bright hues and dramatic shapes.

The film was shot at the old opera house in Hudson, New York and at American painter Frederic Church’s Moorish style mansion in the Olana state park. Directed by Shruti Ganguly and JD Urban, the film featured Ariana DeBose as the muse, and Surina Jindal as Amrita Sher Gil.

Models wore diamond jewellery by Forevermark and bangles by Dinosaur Designs. Makeup artist Yumi Kaizuka gave the models a fresh-faced look with bold, colour-blocked eyeshadow. Mohapatra told Vogue India that he felt it was important to have a, “diverse and inclusive cast,” and be an example of bringing community together.

Mohapatra also told Vogue India that he is looking into making his business model more sustainable and customer-focused and plans to open a creative educational institution in India to benefit Indian artisans.
