Bata’s 125th anniversary celebrations in Prague reveals upcoming plans for India
The Canadian-owned Switzerland-based footwear brand chose the Zofin Palace in Prague as the venue to hold a runway showcase and party to mark its 125th year in the industry. The event’s theme for Bata Fashion Weekend 2019 was “The Evolution of Style” with a focus on style of the future. The event brought together representatives from all of the countries in which Bata retails, including India.
Bata’s India representative, Sandeep Kataria, participated in a panel talk at the event with the brand’s global team on heritage and future plans for its different markets. Kataria told Mansworld India that he shared in Prague that the brand’s India focus will also be “The Evolution of Style” with more stores in new markets planned for the year.
“The love and artistry of making shoes are in our DNA, and will always be, but the brand has evolved over time as tastes and styles have changed, and so has Bata, often driving those changes through our own innovations,” said Kataria.
The two-day event also featured an awards ceremony led by Bata Heritage’s head Charles Pignal, a gala dinner, animations, and an array of dance performances. Runway shows displayed future launches for the brand, including shoes set to hit the Indian market soon.
Bata plans to open 500 franchise-run stores in India by 2024 with a focus on Tier 3 and 4 towns. The business witnessed a 69 percent increase in standalone profit in India to Rs 88 crore ($12.7 million) for the fourth financial quarter which ended on March 31, 2019. This figure was up from Rs 52 crore during the same period in the last financial year.
